Lake Mission Viejo Fishing

Lake Mission Viejo Fishing

Lake Mission Viejo Fishing is fun, challenging and rewarding.

Fishing For Trout

Lake Mission Viejo Fishing is centered around Trout. It’s the one variety of fish which is stocked annually (trout typically don’t survive the summer), has a NO-Release restriction and is featured in Fishing Contests.

Lake Mission Viejo Trout Stocking

Lake Mission Viejo Trout Stocking is an exciting annual event.  The typical trout stocking is about 4000 Pounds Of Rainbow Trout.

These large shipments of rainbow trout begin in time for opening day and usually end in March. It’s a always a good idea to go fishing during the stocking season.

Trout Stocking

Mt. Lassen Trout Inc.
located in Northern California was founded in 1949 and is a main supplier of rainbow trout for the 124 acre man-made Lake Mission Viejo, which is situated in Orange County, California in the beautiful planned community of Mission Viejo.

This video shows a typical delivery of a 4000 pound trout stocking.

This delivery of 4000 pounds of rainbow trout is typical of many trout stocking deliveries at Lake Mission Viejo during the months of November through March.

* Actual deliveries and dates are subject to change and are usually 4000-8000 pounds with a total seasonal delivery this year of around 50,000 Pounds of Trout.

How To Catch Trout At Lake Mission Viejo

In addition to Mt. Lassen Trout Inc. trout deliveries,
Nebraska’s Chaulk Mound Trout Farm  is another Lake Mission Viejo Fishing trout supplier. Their fish, Ruby Red “Tail Walkers”, are known to be well-muscled, full finned and full of “Fight”. You’ll know one when you catch one.

My daughter, a friend and myself each caught a nice rainbow trout in a two hour morning session and returned in the afternoon to catch a few more rainbow trout.

It was a fun-filled day which created a lasting memory.

Lake Mission Viejo Fishing Derby

It was a beautiful day for an Annual Lake Mission Viejo Fishing Derby.

With gorgeous blue skies and crystal clear water, it was easy to see hundreds of hungry freshly stocked trout swimming in a tight circle, while the young children ages 3-10 anxiously awaited the count down to begin the contest.

Once the action began, it was none stop as fish after fish after fish was netted to the delight of everyone.

Although winners were declared for various age categories
based upon the largest fish caught, everyone was a Winner.  There was excitement, action, smiles, laughter, high fives, dancing and a lifetime memory created for children and parents.

Lake Mission Viejo FishingThis popular event for children 10 years old and younger is a great way for parents to introduce their kids to the excitement of catching a fish.  Based upon the time of year, water temperature and generous stocking, catching a trout is the most likely outcome at The Fishing Derby.

Lightning Trout

A Trout of a different color is exactly what Mt. Lassen Fish Hatchery, located in California, got when it started producing the Lightning Trout.

Lake Mission Viejo recently received a large shipment from Mt. Lassen Trout Farm which included over a 1000 pounds of Lightning Trout.

The Lightning Trout is actually a Rainbow Trout, it just doesn’t look like a Rainbow Trout, because of it’s color.

A long time ago, a male rainbow trout with a golden appearance
was discovered at Mount Lassen Trout Farm.  This particular trout apparently had a recessive gene that became dominant and produced the unusual color.

Mount Lassen bred the “special” male rainbow trout with hundreds of normal female rainbow trout hoping one or more females also possessed the same recessive gene for the golden appearance.  It was a huge success!

Fishing For Bass

Despite the excitement of trout season, once the weather and water gets warmer, it’s time for some large-mouth bass. Here’s a good instructional video…

If you don’t have a fishing pool, here’s another way to catch bass…

Fishing For Sunfish

Catching Sunfish can a lot of fun whether you’re on the dock on in a boat. You may be surprised to find that some sunfish are bigger than the average sized trout. The secret to catching sunfish is to use worms. Fish love worms!

Fishing For Catfish

Catfish are in a totally different class of Lake Mission Viejo Fishing.

At one time the lake boasted an 80 pound catfish sighting which is not too much bigger than the lake record catfish that weighed in at over 73 pounds.
